FAQ Pneumonia

If you are suffering from a mild case of pneumonia, it can be managed at home. However, hospitalisation might be necessary for the following:

  • Children below two years
  • Individuals over the age of 65
  • Those who are immunocompromised
  • Individuals receiving chemotherapy
  • Those who are extremely sick such as those with shortness of breath

It is a serious condition and it can be fatal for some individuals, especially for those in high-risk groups such as infants and young kids, elderly patients (above 65), and individuals with a weak immune system. Most do respond well to treatment and recover from it. However, it is important to note that pneumonia can be associated with adverse complications, such as:

  • Respiratory failure
  • Fluid buildup (pleural effusion)
  • Bacteremia
  • Lung abscess

Respiratory physicians or pulmonologists specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of several respiratory conditions including pneumonia.

Lung specialist A/Prof Philip Eng, who practises at Philip Eng Respiratory & Medical Clinic, specialises in respiratory and critical care management with a focus on evidence-based medicine and patient care. If you suspect you have a respiratory condition, get in touch with the clinic for more information or to book an appointment.
